Vela's 2010 Team
In this industry, with the wide variety of boats available, knowledge is everything. Not only will you find the right boat when you work with Vela, we will make sure that the boat you have chosen is the cleanest and best example available. As we like to say, we're boaters first and brokers second. We invite you to put our experience to work for you!
SHAWN DUNAND
Shawn grew up using the limited available water in Alberta, and exploring with all the craft that could ply those waters, canoes, kayaks, windsurfers, runabouts, small sail, and other items that float. Later aquatic interludes include local and long distance sailing/cruising, 3000nm+solo sea miles, crewing on many types of craft including large sail and few catamarans. Shawn’s work and time around the water has brought him to the Caribbean, Panama, along with the US, Canadian, & Mexican Pacific Coast.
Shawn became part of Vela Yacht Sales in 2009 and strives to improve upon the professionalism and ethics bestowed in past business experiences with the joy of helping fellow boaters find and sell their perfect and occasionally imperfect vessels.
SKIP MCCARTHY
Skip grew up down by the river in Indiana, in a Tom Sawyer like setting. He graduated from wood rafts, canoes, and fish boats to sailboats in university where he participated in regattas every chance he got.
He worked in an Ontario plant building C&C sailboats and delivering boats on weekends. Skip then migrated to the West Coast and lived in Desolation Sound where he ran a boat (the first Uchuck), freighting, log salvaging and fishing.
After a return bout to university, Skip worked in fisheries on both the East and West coasts of Canada and in Africa, while sailing during the less icy months in Lake Ontario and on special occasions, in BC.
Since returning to the West Coast, Skip has enjoyed recreational sailing and fixing up boats.
JIM ALLEN
Jim grew up in New Zealand and has been sailing and building boats since he was 6 years old. He went through the typical Kiwi sailing program that has seen so many respected sailors come out of that country.
He has a great deal of experience racing and cruising sailboats through the Pacific and locally in Victoria since 1975 and is well known and respected in the local sailing community for his good communication skills and extensive sailing and boat construction knowledge.
The former owner of Vela Yacht Sales, Jim has returned on a part time basis and looks forward to serving his former clients and new ones.
